a body cavity is any fluid-filled space in a multicellular organism. However, the term usually refers to the space located between an animal’s outer covering (epidermis), and the outer lining of the gut cavity, where internal organs develop. "The human body cavity", normally refers to the ventral body cavity, because it is by far the largest one in volume

      • The ventral body cavity is a human body cavity that is in the anterior(front) aspect of the human body. It is made up of the thoracic cavity, and the abdomino pelvic cavity

      • the thoracic cavity (or chest cavity) is the chamber of the human body that is protected by the thoracic walll (thoracic cage and associated skin, muscle, and fascia). The pelvic cavity is a body cavity that is bounded by the bones of the pelvis . Its oblique roof is the pelvic inlet (the superior opening of the pelvis).

      • abdominal cavity is the body cavity of the human body (and animal bodies) that holds the bulk of the viscera. It is located below (or inferior to) the thoracic cavity, and above the pelvic cavity.

        • cranial cavity, or intracranial space, is the space formed inside the skull. The brain occupies the cranial cavity, which is lined by the meninges and which contains cerebrospinal fluid to cushion blows. Eight fused cranial bones together form the cranial cavity.

spinal canal (or vertebral canal or spinal cavity) is the space in vertebrae through which the spinal cord passes

      • the dorsal body cavity consists of the cranial cavity that contains the brain, and the vertebral cavity (or canal) that contains the spinal cord

        • Sagittal Plane: Divides body into right and left sides

        • Transverse Plan: Divides body into upper and lower portions

        • Frontal Plan: Divides body into front and back portions
